Floaters
Floaters
Floaters are experienced by almost everyone. You may have occasionally noticed small spots or cobwebs the float across the vision. This can be very normal – _however, a sudden increase in the number of floaters, especially black dots, can be a sign of a retinal tear which needs urgent repair to prevent possible blindness. If you experience new floaters, contact us immediately
Inside the eye there is a see-through jelly (called the vitreous). At the start of life, this is firmly stuck to the back of the eye. This means it is in close contact to the retina (the part responsible for seeing). With age, the jelly becomes more liquid and begins to become shrink. This creates small clumps in the jelly that give us floaters, which in themselves are harmless. However, when the jelly
shrinks it pulls on the retina, and if it suddenly comes away may cause a small tear in the retina. The retinal tear is potentially very dangerous. When this happens, you may experience new floaters as well as a sensation of flashing lights. If you experience this, please contact Texoma Retina Center
A retinal tear is a small hole in the retina. You will not necessarily know if you have a tear or not. They can be dangerous because they can lead to the retinal peeling off the back of the eye (a retinal detachment). If not diagnosed or treated, this can cause irreversible blindness. If you are short-sighted and experience new floaters, it is even more important to have your eyes checked for a retinal tear.
Floaters can sometimes be very troublesome, even if there is no retinal tear. Some people learn to ignore them, but others find they interfere with their vision and daily activities. They can be treated with a short laser procedure.
