Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a degenerative disease of the optic nerve, the cable that connects the eyeball back to the brain. It is known as the silent thief of vision because it is typically asymptomatic in the early stages of disease. There is no cure for glaucoma but early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent significant irreversible vision loss
While anyone can get glaucoma, here is a short but non-exhaustive list of those at higher risk:
- are Age over 40
- hispanic, african american, asian
- have a family history of glaucoma
- have a history of chronic steroid medication use
- have high eye pressure
How is glaucoma diagnosed?
Your optometrist or ophthalmologist will perform one or more of these tests to screen for glaucoma
- Tonometry – check of intraocular pressure
- Gonioscopy – a check of the natural drainage system of the eye where the iris and cornea form an angle
- OCT RNFL – a scan of your optic nerve to define how much healthy neural tissue you have
- Visual Field Test: this is a functional test to map out areas of decreased peripheral vision (often asymptomatic to us in the early stage)
