Lattice degeneration

Lattice degeneration

Lattice degeneration occurs when the retina’s periphery begins to degenerate.
There are no apparent symptoms of lattice degeneration. Therefore, it is important to routinely have the eyes checked. Typically, a diagnosis occurs after a fundus exam, in which the retinas are assessed by dilating the eyes.
Normally, lattice degeneration does not progress, and vision is not usually affected. Therefore, treatment is not typically needed. However, in more severe cases, laser treatment and cryotherapy are used to remove the thinning parts of the retina’s periphery.
