Macular
Degeneration
Macular treatment diagnosis and treatment is available in Allen, TX with our fellowship trained subspecialist Dr. Khetpal.
Approximately 20 million americans or 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 50 have macular degeneration. This condition affects your macula, the geographic central part of your retina which is responsible for your sharp vision. Its early stages are typically asymptomatic but the later stages can cause profound central vision loss. It doesn’t cause complete blindness as the peripheral vision is usually preserved unless there are additional eye problems.
Your optometrist or ophthalmologist may diagnose and evaluate macular degeneration with the following modalities
- Dilated eye exam: this dilates your pupil and allows your doctor to directly view your retina
- Optical Coherence Tomography: this technology is noninvasive and details the layers of your retina
- Fluorescein Angiography: A yellow vegetable dye called fluorescein may be administered to circulate in your blood stream and can be visualized in the vessels of your eye to find areas of leaking blood vessels
