Treatment goals
Do not be overwhelmed with the numerous treatment options that exist to treat glaucoma. The treatment is individualized for each person based on lifestyle, target intraocular pressure, and patient specific disease/anatomy. Your doctor will discuss the pertinent options for you.
The treatment for glaucoma is aimed at lowering the intraocular pressure (IOP) to slow the disease process with the end goal of preserving quality of life. Achieving the appropriate intraocular pressure is a lifelong endeavor that is dependent on which therapies work and for how long. Sometimes, a particular therapy that works initially may be later insufficient if either the therapy stops working, you do not tolerate the therapy, or if we detect progression and need to achieve a lower IOP.
