Cataract Surgery and Process

What are cataracts?

Cataracts are a common aging change in the eye. It causes a clouding of the natural lens of eye making tasks such as driving at night and reading small print on television even with glasses difficult. A cataract can develop in one or both of your eyes. Patients often refer to their vision of cataracts as looking through a dirty window, or looking through a waterfall. While cataracts are often related to aging, they may also be caused by eye trauma, long-term diabetes, corticosteroid medications, or radiation treatments.

Cataracts are removed with a quick outpatient surgery requiring minimal sedation. It can be performed with a femtosecond laser or with standard micro-incisional techniques. The surgery is painless and has a fast recovery with improvement in vision in just a few days. Cataract surgery is a once in a lifetime opportunity to change your vision to see without glasses for distance, intermediate, and near. A small incision is made in front of the eye. The cataract is removed with a ultrasound(phacoemulsification) machine. A new lens is implanted into the eye to correct the vision.

The cataract technology is a miraculously life changing procedures to improve your vision which can help you enjoy day to day activities ranging from driving, enjoying activities with family, sports and crafts to watching tv or using your smartphone

Advanced lens and premium lens are available after cataract surgery to help reduce glasses dependence. The standard lens provides clearest vision at one focal point which can be made for distance, near, or anywhere in between but does not correct astigmatism. A toric lens or astigmatism correcting lens will provide one of the highest quality vision at a single focal point. Premium lenses typically have different zones built into the lens to provide clear vision at several focal points including distance and near.

A complex cataract is one that is a result of either history of past trauma, an underlying eye condition and previous eye surgery which makes it surgically challenging to do these surgeries. A complex cataract can involve multiple surgeries.
